ABCs: Publisher update

Key magazine publishers share their views on the latest data release

Chris Duncan, Bauer Media’s CEO of UK Publishing: “We are extremely proud to see Bauer retain its position as the UK’s biggest publisher of consumer magazines with a set of results that demonstrate the wide reach of our brand portfolio, both in print and digitally. Our continued position as the leader across many markets is a true testament to our teams’ ability to produce content that consistently attracts highly engaged and loyal audiences.”

A heartfelt thanks goes out to all our hardworking teams, retailers and advertisers, and our millions of loyal readers. Bauer remains committed to working with our partners to continue to innovate and evolve our exceptional content in 2024.”

Katie Vanneck-Smith, CEO of Hearst UK: “In 2023 we repositioned the business to deliver long-term growth, and we are encouraged by the green shoots we’re starting to see. Our overall paid direct subscriptions have increased year-on-year, driven by a strong digital subscription performance. We have four titles in headline growth, and a number increasing UK actively purchased copies. Our continued investment in print has also led to an increase in newsstand retail sales value through the second half of the year. As a house of world-class, trusted brands, we are excited for the next stage of our journey – building and growing our highly engaged audiences by delivering exceptional content worth paying for.”

Sean Cornwell, Immediate CEO: “Immediate continues to attract scaled audiences with quality content from trusted brands they love. Our print titles remain a vital part of our business, whilst we continue to grow our offer across all platforms, with a focus on premium digital content, services and subscriptions. We now have 1.07m** subscribers, including almost 500,000 for our digital apps. Last year our podcasts had over 52m downloads, and our video content received 51m views, as we continue to deepen engagement with our audiences across multiple formats, providing content however they want to consume it.”
